Fruits Reveal Roots

Sometimes on the way to drop off my son at school, we have a little talk about the verse of the day from the YouVersion Bible app. https://www.youversion.com

Today the verse was about the fruit of the Spirit from Galatians 5.  I love this verse.  It is a very memorable and simple checklist of the things that people should see in us when things are working right.

Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Luke agreed that if we want apples, we wouldn’t go to an apple tree and shake our fist and mutter, “Apples! Apples! Apples!”  That is just silly (although, I would love to see someone try to get apples that way).  No, you would make sure the apple tree had enough water and that there weren’t bugs harming the tree.  You may even add some fertilizer to insure the tree had the proper nutrients to produce healthy fruit.  If you have healthy roots finding the proper nutrients, you will have good fruit.

In the same way, we could walk around muttering to ourselves, “be patient! be loving! hold it together! be kind! control yourself!” and have some limited results but how much easier would it be to guarantee fruit?  Focus on the roots today.  Invite the Holy Spirit to fill your mind and soul today and to be the leader.  Occasionally throughout your day, even just a simple prayer like, “refill me, Holy Spirit, and lead me” will go a long way to seeing fruit without struggling and striving for it.
